As of September 2021, Discord reported a total of 150 million users worldwide. That’s astonishing, and we imagine that number won’t stop growing anytime soon.
However, with so many people on this platform, how does Discord ensure everyone gets a unique username? With 150 million people, there have to be duplicate names, right?
Well, since the beginning, this platform has Discord Tags which is the solution to this problem.
Let’s delve further to see what it is and how it works.

What Are Discord Tags?
Discord tags are a unique set of numbers that are automatically assigned to every newly registered account on the platform. This number is used so both users and Discord can identify between different usernames.
Here’s an example:
Two people register with the name John and Discord assigns them tags so their accounts can be unique. So, one will be John#0001, while the other will be John#0002.
What Is My Discord Tag?
If you want someone to add you to Discord, you must share your username and tag. To find the Discord tag, just open the app on your PC, look at the bottom-left of the window, and you will see the number right under your username.
Tip: You can click on the username or number, and it will copy it to your clipboard!
How To Find Your Discord Tag
Here’s what you should do if you want to find someone else’s Discord tag:
- Open Discord.
- Click on Home (top-left) and then open the user’s direct messages.
- Then, at the top of the Discord window, click on the user’s profile to see their Discord tag.
Alternatively, you can enter a server, click on a username, and their profile with the Discord tag will open. This can be accomplished in voice and text channels and even through the member list on the right.
How To Change Your Discord Number
While a Discord tag is unique to one user, there is a way you can change it.
Unfortunately, you will need to subscribe to Nitro to get the option to change your Discord number. However, it’s not all bad since it’s possible to find a Nitro subscription for free, and depending on your Discord use, Nitro might be worth it.
Don’t worry, if you don’t appreciate the characteristics, you can always cancel it.
If you decide to subscribe, here’s what you will need to do to change the tag:
- Open Discord.
- Go to User Settings (bottom-left).
- Click on the My Account tab and then hit the Edit button next to your username.
- Here, you will be able to change your username and your tag; just make sure you have your Discord password ready.
- Click Done!
Here are some awesome Discord tags suggestions:
- 1111
- 0001
- 1000
- 1010
- 1337
- 6666
- 6969
- 9999
And that’s it! You now have a different discord tag.
But remember that you will lose your custom tag when your Nitro subscription ends. Additionally, you will be assigned a randomized number after losing the custom one.
Why Did My Discord Tag Change?
Have you ever noticed that your Discord numbers change even though you’ve never subscribed to Nitro? That’s because your numbers can change if you change your username. How does that happen?
Let’s say your current username and ID is Jack2#1111, and you try to rename it to Jack1. If there is already a Jack1 with an 1111 tag, your numbers will automatically change to something different so you can have a unique ID.
If all 9999 tags are claimed for that username, you cannot change to that name.
