Most would agree that Discord’s user interface and design look pretty sleek and intuitive. Easy on the eyes too. However, by default Discord is set to its light theme/background.
For some or maybe for most people the light theme is simply too bright, especially during the night.
If you want to save your eyes and enjoy a darker version of Discord, you will be glad to hear that there is a way to change the background.
Changing Discord Background
There is no feature available that allows you to freely customize or add a unique desktop background, but there is an option that changes the color gamut from light to dark.
Follow these steps below to achieve that:
- Go to User Settings and then into the Appearance tab.
- By default, Light Theme should be selected. You should now select the Dark Theme.
That’s all you have to do to change the background from light to dark.
With the settings available, there’s not a whole lot you can with Discord’s appearance.
However, there are some customizations you can do outside of the application. Something a bit more complex, but you will get a lot more freedom with customizing the background, etc.
An open-source and custom-made alternative to Discord. It is based on the original app with a few fan-made changes to certain features.
One of the changes made is the ability to use CSS coding to add plugins and different themes. In other words, you would be able to change the background of your Discord to anything you want.
Follow this step-by-step guide to successfully change your theme:
Afterward, launch the installer and follow through with the installation process. Keep in mind that you must have original Discord installed on your device, otherwise, you won’t be able to install BetterDiscord
Launch Discord as you would usually and you should get a pop-up window for BetterDiscord patch notes. This means you have successfully installed the custom app.
BetterDiscord is now ready to use. To add a custom theme, you will first need to download one.
There are a few ways you can do that. You could either use websites such as BetterDiscordLibrary which is a library full of CSS themes made for the BetterDiscord app or you could join the official Discord server and check out the #theme-repo channel.
After you have picked and downloaded a theme you like, head on over back to the Discord app and follow these steps:
- Go to User Settings and look at the bottom of the menu list on the left to find the Themes tab under Bandaged BD settings.
- In here, click on the blue Open Theme Folder button located on the top.
- This will open up a folder in Windows Explorer where you will need to add the .css theme file you downloaded.
- Now head back to Discord and enable the theme you have added.
- Once enabled, the entire application should now switch over to this new theme.
And you are now finally done. Your Discord will stick with this theme as long as you don’t delete BetterDiscord.
The only other way to change the background or theme is by adding your CSS code manually. But, that method is not recommended because the app will reset to its default appearance every time you restart it.
Nevertheless, we hope that you will find this guide useful and that you will enjoy this new design of Discord.
